Tidal Diamond No. 510
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Geoff Steele. Geoff was Director of Portsmouth Outdoor Centre for 20 years and a great friend and supporter of Tudor Sailing Club. Sadly, Geoff was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease in 2013 and died peacefully at home on 28th April. His wife Alison, who also worked at the Outdoor Centre and will be known to a good number of members, is following Geoff’s wishes by urging all those who knew him to remember him as someone who loved boats, the sea and had an immense love for Langstone Harbour.
Geoff’s funeral will take place at Wessex Vale Crematorium, Hedge End at 1.45pm on Tuesday 17th May. All friends welcome. Dress is smart but not black please.

Tudor Patrol Boat Scenario Discussion – NEW START TIME
Please note that the start time of this session will be 8:30pm, rather than 7:30 as previously published. As we are running a Friendly Friday session, this will still give people the chance to get out on the water beforehand.
Paul Rivington will be running a discussion session for all Patrol Boat helms and crew. During this session, Paul will be explaining a number of scenarios that we could face and will be asking everyone to consider what their course of action would be. We can then discuss the relative risks and merits of possible options before hearing the choices that Paul would like to see us taking.
It can be all too easy to consider someone’s competence as a Patrol Boat helm by their boat handling skills but, in most cases, the relative safety of individuals on the water will be enhanced or degraded far more significantly by the quality of decisions they make in the heat of the moment. This session will allow us to consider a wide range of scenarios, both in and out of the harbour, in calm or deteriorating weather and in racing or cruising scenarios and we can challenge ourselves (out loud or just in thought!) about the decisions we would take.
I highly recommend this as an excellent way to refresh your decision making skills and, as a club, we hope that all PB helms and crew will make every effort to attend (including those who have not yet got their Tudor PB1 or PB2).
The bar will be open and we will be firing up the BBQ so please feel free to bring along something to cook. Will Stokely
Friendly Fridays – Friday 13th May 2016, 19:00
The second Friendly Friday this season starts around 19:00 at the club and as an added bonus coincides with high water this week!
TSC invite all members to get on the water in the company of others and enjoy our wonderful facilities and sailing area. Help will be on hand to those members looking for advice and support, from rigging your boat, to building up your confidence on the water. Last week, owing to the lack of wind, club members rallied round and helped a relatively new club member with his Wanderer so that he is ready to take to the water. If you need some help with a tricky boat fix, this is your opportunity to enlist the knowledge, advice and tools of fellow club members.
After the water activities the TSC gas BBQ will be available, so if you fancy some food post activities, please bring your favourite meats or meat substitute and accompaniments to cook on the grill. The TSC bar will also be open to keep you hydrated with your favourite tipple.
The club dinghies (Feva’s & Q’Ba) will be available for those who wish to try them out in an informal environment. Help will be on hand to show you where they are stored and how they are rigged. We are also encouraging all our kayaking members to come and enjoy a paddle.
Any trained Tudor patrol boat helms / crews looking to brush up their boat handling skills are also welcome to take out one of the TSC patrol boats.
If you would like any more information, would like to book a club boat, arrange a session in a patrol boat or have any other questions, please contact Richard Barnes, Dinghy Captain. dinghies or call me on my telephone number published in the club calendar.
Bruce, Committee Boat Project – Sunday 15th May 2016, 11:00

There is a poster attached if members would like to print and put up at work, please spread the word around the local area. Prospective members that sign up on the day will not have to pay the usual joining fee. We need lots of volunteers to assist in various roles, examples are below:
- Conducting tours of the club
- Car park marshalling
- Taking people out on the water in dinghies / cruisers
- Boats that we can borrow for the day to take prospective members out in (we will put in an experienced sailor) – good boats would be Visions, wanderers, wayfarers etc
- Loans of sit on kayaks for the day
- People to rig boats such as Oppies / Fevas
- Help on BBQ and bar
If you can spare some time to help make the open day a success (and increase our membership) then please get in touch.
The maintenance committee has been working steadily with the help of members to ensure the clubhouse is kept in a good state of repair as required in the terms of our lease and meeting all the statutory regulations such as legionnaires checks , PAT testing and fire safety. However we need to push ahead with various projects and are seeking members who have professional experience and would be willing to advise us.
- Fencing contractor, for improved compound security.
- Electrician, improved extraction for the changing rooms and lighting for the club room to allow for different functions.
- Drainage / Groundworks, to ascertain the viability of connecting the clubhouse to mains drainage.
General work available towards your maintenance:
- The galley needs redecorating
- Some barge boards require replacing due to the timber rotting
- The paving outside the front entrance could be improved by being repaired and repointed.
Please contact the maintenance committee if you are able to offer assistance maintenance.
